Who was Cowper?

Cowper is named after Francis Thomas de Gray, 7th Earl Cowper. He was born in 1834 and was a descendant of Richard Hale. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the army and was chairman of Hertfordshire County Council between 1889 and 1901. He gave money for the improvements to the school in 1900, including buying the new Headmaster’s house.

Mr Hicks, Head of House, says:

The values of integrity, kindness, and ambition, taken together, help to develop young adults with good principles, who always try their best, and who always try to do the right thing, even when that might be difficult. How students of Cowper represent themselves in any arena is of paramount importance. It is effort and enthusiasm that are valued most highly in Cowper. For generations we have found that cheerful and willing participation breeds confidence and success in whatever field you can think of.

I became Head of Cowper in 2022 having been a student and now PE & Business teacher at the school. I have fond memories of House plays, and House songs, which stand out as character building moments. It is these memories that I wish to share with members of Cowper to inspire boys to develop a selfless and considerate attitude towards those around them, whilst always pushing themselves to fulfil their potential. I would encourage all members of Cowper to remember that your House and Richard Hale never leave you.
